Objection to DA - May 18, 2020

A redevelopment with little respect to the heritage and history of this iconic pool.

The proposed redevelopment, as amended, will have a severe and detrimental impact upon the heritage significance and values of the North Sydney Olympic Pool (“NSOP”) site itself and on adjoining state listed heritage items including the Luna Park Precinct, Sydney Harbour Bridge and Milsons Point Wharf and Seawall – the only intact Art Deco precinct in the State.

The proposed demolition of the original Grandstand, a portion of the Eastern Sundeck, Childrens’ Pools and the existing 25 m pool building fails to conserve the heritage significance of the item, its fabric, settings and views contrary to the objectives of clause 5.10 of the NSLEP 2013. These structures are inherent to the social, cultural and architectural heritage significance of the site.

Notwithstanding cosmetic amendments to the proposed entrance and Alfred Street façade and partial retention of the eastern sundeck/colonnade the amended proposal will have a devastating impact on the outstanding heritage significance of the NSOP. Download the full submission below.

Objection to DA - December 13, 2019

Council has an obligation to be a “model applicant” in submitting any development application. This development application does not meet the standard expected of a model applicant.

There are internal inconsistencies within the submitted documents, the commitment to ESD is only to meet a 4 Green Star standard significantly below that which Council advocates for private development of this scale and the protection and conservation of the heritage significance of the Pool, both architectural and social/cultural, is clearly not at the heart of this application. Extraordinarily, Council failed to meet its obligations under moral rights legislation to effectively consult with the architects of the current 25 metre pool building.

“Do you have a design in mind for your blog? Whether you prefer a trendy postcard look or you’re going for a more editorial style blog - there’s a stunning layout for everyone.”

Furthermore, the timing of the lodgement of the DA is unfortunate as it has resulted in a short period of time for the community to be able to make submissions in relation to a voluminous amount of information - thousands of pages of documents and plans- over a busy pre-Christmas period. This is the first opportunity that the community has had to understand not only the “concept” of the proposed redevelopment but also the detail of the proposed built form.
