The Real Independents
ST LEONARDS
Chris Holding
I made my home in Cremorne more than a decade ago, with my wife and two young daughters, and in recent years I’ve become very active in local community issues.
I’ve experienced first-hand how desperately we need an independent voice to represent us.
In 2016, I helped re-establish and co-chair Brightmore Precinct which is a resident run community group operating under the guidance of North Sydney Council. While volunteering in the precinct system I was able to assist, and respond to, a growing number of development and community-raised issues. Throughout my liaison with Council in that time, it became clear to me we badly needed more independent councillors.
I’m very concerned about the exponential growth facing North Sydney LGA - not least the Western Harbour Tunnel, Beaches Link Tunnel and major developments in St Leonards and Neutral Bay Town Centre. All of these are likely to be constructed concurrently over the next five years!
I want to alleviate the impact of these projects on public transport, local business and shopping precincts, not to mention air quality and congestion on local roads.
North Sydney needs an independent voice to ensure that these State Government projects, and the developers, deliver better urban design with proper green space, for our local community.
Prior to residing in Cremorne, I lived and worked in London and Hong Kong. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, from Coventry University in the United Kingdom, and have worked most of my life as a television Producer - across sport, entertainment and tourism. I spent three years covering every round of the Formula One World Championship. More recently I had a lead role for FIFA at the Soccer World Cup in both Brazil (2014) and Russia (2018).
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I’ve been helping coordinate the quarantine hotel response with St John Ambulance in Sydney CBD. I’ll bring my organisational skills and experience in the precinct system to Council. Just as importantly, with my background in television and journalism, I know how to ask the right questions and get to the heart of an issue.
I’ll bring this talent - and my passion for the truth - to Council.
If I get any spare time I’m a keen film buff and revel in living so close to the Orpheum (an amazing cinema!) I’m passionate about all creative arts but especially music – I used to DJ! and I play the drums (idiosyncratically - or perhaps badly?)
I swim occasionally, cycle - and love to travel with my family. It goes without saying that our wealth of good food (and wines to taste) make it a joy to live here.
I’m also a volunteer with St John Ambulance.
Finally, I’m independent and have never been a paid member of any political party.
